The techniques in this group apply when the defendant is grabbed by the arm or the wrist.

Wrist grab, palm upwards defense

In this technique, the attacker grabs the top of the wrist.

Step 1. The defender pulls the attacker in by raising and bending the corresponfing elbow.
Step 2. The defender lowers their elbow over the front of the attacker's arm,
Step 3. The defender releases the attacker's grasp by rolling their own hand up.

Finally, the defender can become attacker by striking uraken to the face. However, as George advises, take care before changing role.


Wrist grab, palm downwards defense
In this technique, the attacker grabs the underside of the wrist.

The attacker pulls the defender forward by the wrist. Picking their moment, the defender steps across the line of movement with the corresponding foot, then pushes down and out with the hand, breaking the hold.

Defense against Upper-arm grab

In this technique, the attacker grabs the defender's upper arm.

Step 1. The defender makes a complete forward circle of the arm, probably breaking the grasp.
Step 2. The defender makes a second complete forward circle of the arm, certainly breaking the grasp.

Finally, the defender can become attacker by striking haito to the face. However, as George advises, take care before changing role.


Defense against Upper-arm grab #2

In this technique, the attacker grabs the defender's upper arm. The first defenseive technique has failed.

Step 1. The defender makes a half forward circle of the grasped arm, leaving it high above the attacker's head, and turns inward to face the atatcker..
Step 2. The defender strikes shotei uke across the body with their other hand, striking the attacker's grasp, and knocking it free.
Step 3. The defender uses the raised hand to strike shuto to the attacker's corresponding clavicle. (NB. 7 pounds pressure is all it takes to break a clavicle)
